One day is not much for a capital like Madrid, but the historic centre is compact. With a good plan you can see the essentials, enjoy great food and still catch the sunset.
Start with one of the world's great art museums: Velázquez, Goya, El Greco and Bosch. With limited time, focus on the masterpieces — a private guided visit helps you see the highlights in about 90 minutes.
Walk to Puerta del Sol, the symbolic centre of Spain (look for Kilometre Zero), then to the arcaded Plaza Mayor.
A beautiful iron-and-glass market for tapas-style bites before lunch, or a full Spanish lunch nearby from 14:00.
The official residence of the Spanish royal family is one of the largest palaces in Europe. Opposite stands the Almudena Cathedral. Note that the palace can close for official events. Private Royal Palace tour.
Walk through the Sabatini Gardens and Plaza de España to the Templo de Debod for the sunset.
Stroll down Gran Vía to see Madrid's most famous avenue lit up, then head to La Latina for tapas on Cava Baja. Remember that dinner in Spain starts around 21:00.
Walking this route is perfectly possible, but it adds up to many kilometres. A private tuk-tuk tour of 2 to 4 hours covers the Royal Palace, Gran Vía and the historic centre with a local guide, so you can save your energy for the museum and dinner. Hotel pickup is available in central Madrid.
