Toledo Day Trip
from Madrid

Updated October 2026 · By Maison Privé Experiences, private experiences in Madrid since 2019

Toledo is the most rewarding day trip from Madrid. In under an hour you swap the capital's boulevards for a medieval hilltop city wrapped by the Tagus River, where Christian, Jewish and Muslim heritage stand side by side. Its old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.

How to get from Madrid to Toledo

By high-speed train

Trains leave from Madrid Atocha and take around 33 minutes. It is fast, but Toledo's station sits below the old town, so you will need a taxi, a city bus or an uphill walk of roughly 20 minutes to reach the centre. Book tickets in advance on busy days.

By bus

Buses run from the Plaza Elíptica interchange in Madrid and take around an hour. It is the cheapest option, but the journey is slower and you still need to get up into the old town on arrival.

By car

Toledo is about 70 km from Madrid, roughly 45 to 60 minutes by road. Parking inside the old town is very limited, so most drivers leave the car outside the walls.

With a private tour

A private excursion removes all the logistics: a driver picks you up at your hotel, an official guide meets you in Toledo, tickets are arranged and you are taken back to your door. It is the most comfortable option for couples, families and anyone with limited time. See our private Toledo excursion.

What to see in Toledo

Half day or full day?

A half day (around 5 hours including transport) is enough for the main highlights: the Cathedral, a synagogue, a walk through the Jewish quarter and the viewpoint. A full day (around 8 hours) lets you enter more monuments, wander the lanes without rushing and enjoy a long Spanish lunch. If it is your first visit and you love history or art, the full day is worth it.
